Known by various regional names such as Ekki, Azobe, and Kaku, Lophira alata is one of the most durable and robust hardwood species in the world. Sourced from the dense tropical forests of West and Central Africa, this heavy-duty timber is prized for its exceptional strength, weather resistance, and longevity—making it a preferred choice for demanding structural and marine applications.

Key Properties:

• Density: Very high (approx. 1,050–1,200 kg/m³ when dry)

• Color: Dark reddish-brown to purplish-brown heartwood, with pale sapwood

• Grain: Interlocked with a coarse texture

• Durability: Class 1 – Naturally resistant to fungi, insects, and marine borers

• Mechanical Strength: Excellent load-bearing and shock-resistance properties

Common Applications:

• Heavy marine and freshwater construction (bridges, docks, pilings)

Working Characteristics:

• Due to its high density, Ekki can be challenging to machine and requires specialized tools.
