Key Properties:

  • Density: Very high (approx. 1,050–1,200 kg/m³ when dry)

  • Color: Dark reddish-brown to purplish-brown heartwood, with pale sapwood

  • Grain: Interlocked with a coarse texture

  • Durability: Class 1 – Naturally resistant to fungi, insects, and marine borers

  • Mechanical Strength: Excellent load-bearing and shock-resistance properties

Common Applications:

  • Heavy marine and freshwater construction (bridges, docks, pilings)

  • Railway sleepers and industrial flooring

  • Outdoor structures (decking, beams, fencing)

  • High-stress structural components in civil engineering

Working Characteristics:

  • Due to its high density, Ekki can be challenging to machine and requires specialized tools.

  • It holds fasteners well and offers excellent wear resistance in abrasive environments.

  • Can be finished smoothly and treated with oil or sealants to enhance performance.
